Celebrating King Charles III’s Coronation
On Saturday, May 6, 2023, King Charles will be crowned at Westminster Abbey in London. The date marks 8 months since his automatic appointment as King and the first Coronation to take place on the weekend since 1902. Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation took place around 11 am and lasted almost 3 hours; therefore, it is likely that King Charles' ceremony would follow a similar schedule.
The Prime Minister of the UK has announced a bank holiday to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. The holiday will fall on Monday, May 8 (2 days after the Coronation). This allows families and communities to unite and celebrate by participating in local and national events across the United Kingdom.
The Coronation Ceremony of King Charles III
Coronation is a ceremony in which someone is crowned King or Queen.' It comes from the Latin word 'corona,' which means crown.
On the day of the coronation ceremony, there are 5 main sections of the process:
The king will walk into the Abbey, accompanied by the Queen, as the choir sings. The king, also known as the Sovereign and Supreme Governor of the Church of England, will take an oath to uphold the gospel and maintain doctrine and worship in the Church of England.
The choir will sing more songs than usual on the day of the Coronation. The king's robe will be removed, and he will then be seated on the Coronation chair. The Archbishop then anoints the king with holy oil whilst the choir sings.
The Sovereign is dressed in robes of cloth and gold and returns to the chair. Symbolic items are then presented to him, who graciously accepts them. Finally, the crown is placed on the Sovereign's head.
The newly crowned king leaves the Coronation chair, moves to the throne and sits down. The throne is made for each Coronation, and the king takes possession of the Kingdom. The choir sings (again!) led by the crowning and anointing of the Queen Consort.
The king then receives Holy Communion and sings hymns with the congregation. The Archbishop gives his blessing, and the king exchanges the St Edwards crown for the lighter Imperial State Crown, which he carries in one hand with his sceptre and orb as he walks through the Abbey to the Annexe at its western extremity.
