SAAM bridge: Shibboleth ADFS/Azure AD Authentication Module

Stop multiple logins and different login pages by combining the power of Shibboleth & Active Directory Federated Services / Azure Active Directory resources

There are a number of benefits to using our Azure API service:

  • Only one login for Shibboleth & Azure AD / ADFS resources
  • Unified and single consistent login page and theme for your users
  • Seamless activation - no need to change any login urls or links
  • Full access to all Azure attributes. Only a subset of available attributes can be released via SAML, using our Azure API proxy service we have access to all attributes and additional values such as user licences etc
  • Full access to Shibboleth resolver tests when accessing attributes over the API service

Shibboleth vs Microsoft Azure AD / ADFS

Picking your organisations ideal Identity Provider (IdP) is a crucial business decison and many believe that they have to choose either Shibboleth IdP and Azure AD/ADFS IdP.

Shibboleth was explicitly designed for higher education while Azure AD/ ADFS was created to meet the needs of enterprise applications and was never meant to be used by colleges and universities.

However, why choose between Shibboleth and Azure AD, when you can have the best of both worlds with Overt Software's Shibboleth ADFS/ Azure AD Module (aka SAAM Bridge)?

Accessing both Sibboleth & Azure AD resources

With more and more Shibboleth organisations starting to use Microsoft’s “Active Directory Federation Services” & Azure AD, there becomes a need to seamlessly log on to both Shibboleth and ADFS / Azure resources.

ADFS / Azure resources include but are not limited to SharePoint, Office 365 and Exchange (to name a few), and these resources need to work alongside the more traditional Shibboleth resources for example Learning Management Systems, such as BlackBoard/Moodle, Library systems such as Heritage, and many other online e-resources.

The Shibboleth AzureAD/ ADFS Authentication Module is an Azure API service that creates seamless access and allows fulid movement for users between both groups of resources by reducing the number of times they have to input their credentials.

How does the SAAM bridge avoid multiple logins?

Are you plagued with multiple logins to Shibboleth and Microsoft Azure / ADFS resources? You can make that problem disappear using the Shibboleth ADFS/ Azure AD Module!

By using both systems, users foundd that they needed to log on to ADFS and Shibboleth separately, causing multiple logins and thus preventing a true Single Sign On (SSO) environment - which goes against Overt’s ethos of True Single Sign On.

The Shibboleth ADFS / Azure AD Authentication Module allows users to be simultaneously logged onto both Shibboleth and ADFS / Azure AD. This means that when a user accesses an ADFS / Azure AD or Shibboleth resource, they can seamlessly move between both platforms without the arduous task of logging in multiple times.

How does the SAAM bridge Work?

The diagram below depicts a simple visual represenation of how SAAM & Shibboleth integrate with each other to overcome the need for separate Shibboleth and ADFS / Azure AD logins.
